🌟 Eugene von Guérard
Eugene von Guérard helped make Ferntree Gully famous through his detailed landscape painting in the 1850s. His depiction of the fern-filled forest attracted favourable attention in Melbourne, and the place became a popular excursion destination. Drawings and paintings preserve his close interest in vegetation, landforms and light. His local association is artistic observation of an actual landscape. The image gave city audiences a striking view of the nearby forest, helping turn a gully into a destination as well as a subject for art.
